Aviation expert to assume role in August 2026
IndiGo, one of India’s largest budget carriers, has appointed industry veteran Willie Walsh as its new CEO.
Currently serving as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Walsh is set to join the airline in early August 2026, following the end of his five-year tenure at IATA on 31 July.
With a four-decade career in aviation, Walsh brings international experience to the role. He began as a cadet pilot for Aer Lingus in the late 1970s before becoming CEO of the Irish airline in 2001. Walsh later led British Airways in the early 2000s and went on to spearhead the creation of International Airlines Group (IAG) in 2011.

Commenting on his appointment, Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of IndiGo, said: “His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics makes him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever-evolving and competitive international aviation environment.”
The previous IndiGo CEO, Pieter Elbers, stepped down in early March 2026 with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. Co-founder Rahul Bhatia has been overseeing the airline in the interim.
IndiGo, which holds a 65% market share, recently faced its biggest crisis in December 2025 after cancelling more than 4,500 flights due to crew scheduling issues. Since then, the airline has moved to stabilise operations, following an approximate US$2.5 million fine from India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the disruptions.
