Landmark UAE hotel to undergo major upgrade from April 2026
Dubai’s iconic Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, dubbed the world’s first "seven-star" hotel, will close for 18 months from April 2026 as it undergoes a major refurbishment programme.
The closure will allow for interior upgrades to guest rooms, public areas and back-of-house facilities, marking one of the most significant refurbishments in the hotel’s history.
Following a "rigorous and strategic" selection process, the restoration will be led by acclaimed Interior Architect Tristan Auer, with a mission to preserve Jumeirah Burj Al Arab’s iconic status.
Auer said: "Being entrusted with the very first restoration of a property of this calibre in Dubai — the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, a timeless icon of the region — is a profound privilege. To carry forward, with the utmost dedication, the legacy of such an extraordinary landmark is both an honour and a responsibility.”

The move comes amid wider disruption to regional travel markets during the Iran–Israel war. In February 2026, debris from an intercepted drone caused a minor fire on the hotel’s outer façade, which was quickly contained with no injuries reported.
Opened in 1999, the hotel operated by Jumeirah, is built on an artificial island off Jumeirah Beach. Designed to resemble the sail of a dhow, the property has become a defining symbol of Dubai’s tourism identity. The all-suite hotel features 202 duplex suites, a helipad and signature dining venues including Al Muntaha and Al Mahara, alongside homegrown concepts such as Sal.
“Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is far more than an architectural landmark," added Thomas B Meier, Chief Executive Officer of Jumeirah. "It is a symbol of ambition, craftsmanship and enduring excellence.
"For the last 27 years, this exceptional property has served guests with the same passion and world-class standards that distinguish it from any other hotel in the world. This restoration programme marks a new chapter in the story of Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, one that will carefully preserve the heritage of what is currently the sole property in our Jumeirah limited-edition collection of iconic landmark addresses defined by design distinction and prestige.”
