Sun Siyam Vilu Reef is strengthening its focus on Maldivian culture and cuisine with the roll out of weekly cooking classes offered under its ‘Maldivian Roots Signature Experience’ initiative.
The programme highlights the preparation of traditional dishes using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations, giving guests insight into the Maldives’ authentic flavours and island traditions.
A highlight of the sessions is Kandu Kukulhu, a rolled tuna curry known locally as ‘chicken of the sea’, reflecting the island nation’s longstanding cultural and culinary ties to the ocean.
Led by the resort’s culinary team, guests learn to prepare the recipe from slicing freshly caught tuna to binding rolls with coconut leaves. Throughout the session, chefs share stories behind the dish, offering insight into the cultural and historical significance of Maldivian cuisine.

Mohamed Hameed, Chef de Cuisine at Vilu Reef, said: "Sun Siyam Vilu Reef’s culinary story celebrates Maldivian heritage, moving beyond simply serving fresh seafood.
“It is a connection to our islands, our people, and the traditions that shaped Maldivian cuisine. By sharing these methods, we bring our cultural narrative to life in the most sincere way.”
In addition to cooking classes, the resort offers a variety of other experiences that immerse guests in local culture, including Cinema by Moonlight, an outdoor movie screening experience set aboard a traditional dhoni, a type of Maldivian fishing boat.
The expansion of guest experiences aligns with Sun Siyam’s recent portfolio rebrand revealed earlier this year, marking the group’s 35th anniversary. The rebrand brought all six of its Maldivian and Sri Lankan properties together under a single identity, The House of Siyam.
Sun Siyam’s transformation comes as the Maldives continues to attract global travellers, with the destination ranking among the most popular island getaways. According to dnata Travel, the Maldives topped the list of the most-booked destinations for the 2025 winter season.
