Knocking opponents out of their boats is only part of the fun
Every summer, the banks of the River Main become a gathering point for Mainfest, Frankfurt’s long-running summer festival.
The event unfolds along the riverfront, where food stalls, fairground rides and traditional contests take over the embankment. In 2026, Mainfest runs from 31 July to 3 August.
Set against the backdrop of Frankfurt’s impressive skyline, the celebration retains a distinctly local character, with long-standing rituals and families returning year after year. One of its defining moments is the Fischerstechen, a traditional river contest in which participants balance on narrow boats and attempt to knock their opponent into the water using padded poles.

The setting is central to the experience. The River Main runs through the heart of the festival, with the historic embankment on one side and the city’s modern skyline on the other, creating a contrast that is distinctly Frankfurt. Riverside dining, live entertainment and a steady flow of visitors move along the embankment throughout the week.
Free to enter, Mainfest’s location, at Mainkai, place it within walking distance of Frankfurt’s historic Römerberg square, making the event an obvious choice to include as part of a wider city itinerary.
For visitors, it offers a version of Frankfurt that is easy to fall into, a week when centuries-old celebrations shape the atmosphere as the city settles into the rhythm of summer.
