Extensive renovation programme planned for 2027
International hospitality group Accor is expanding its footprint in the Red Sea with the takeover of Mövenpick’s El Gouna resort in Egypt.
The 420-room property is set to be reflagged under the Sofitel brand, becoming Sofitel El Gouna Resort. In partnership with Orascom Development Egypt and Arabian Peninsula Hospitality, the property will undergo an extensive renovation beginning in 2027.
Set alongside the Red Sea coast, Sofitel El Gouna Resort will offer waterfront access to both the sea and a lagoon. The interior redesign will be influenced by Egyptian heritage. Catering to both business and leisure travellers, the property will also offer multiple dedicated meeting and event spaces.
Located within a 30-minute drive from the city of Hurghada, El Gouna is steadily growing as a tourist destination, currently achieving nearly one million visitors annually. The town is home to more than 18 hotels and 100 dining venues.

The expansion will mark Sofitel’s sixth property in Egypt, adding to the group’s growing portfolio of Middle East and North African (MENA) properties. Sofitel Legend Giza Pyramids, another upcoming hotel, is expected to open by 2028.
Elsewhere in the MENA region, Sofitel is set to launch its biggest hotel yet in Saudi Arabia with the 2026 opening of Sofitel Jabal Omar Makkah. With 1,141 rooms, the property will overtake Sofitel Cairo Downtown Nile with 615 rooms, as Sofitel’s largest hotel.
